What to do with a poem I don't understand?

I looked at the assignment given and started by re-reading the poem to try and grasp some understanding. However, as I thumbed through the poem my attention was visually drawn to the large text that occurs in random places. I decided I would highlight those and like the poem make the jumping of lines read a new poem made up of those words similar to the authors initial attempt. I cut through the multiple layers to frame these words. It radically changed the poem.

The book!

So we started our book carving assignment. I dont know what I should do exactly with the book that will change or alter book in a more constructive way. Should I carve the negative space to make a three dimensional brain or should I carve the brain into the book removing some pieces to create a bowl like figure. I also haven't decided if I want a literal interpretation or an abstruct one. The cover is also something I want to try to incorporate.
